Food Facts: Lycopene

Lycopene is a carotenoid found in some red-colored fruits such as red and pink grapefruit, tomatoes (both fresh and processed), pink guava, papaya and watermelon. (If you are training to burn fat, tomatoes may be a better choice then a high-glycemic index food like watermelon.) It is believed to contribute to prostate health and fight some kinds of cancer. Current research suggests that lycopene is associated with reduced risk of macular degenerative disease, serum lipid oxidation and cancers of the lung, bladder, cervix and skin.
